Silly Face Experts

Tesla and I love the episode of SpongeBob SquarePants called “Face Freeze.”  Patrick and SpongeBob make silly faces and Mr. Krabs warn them their faces will freeze like that.  Of course they don’t believe him and decide to hold their faces in a silly pose for a day.  Sandy the squirrel has to cure them of face freeze.  So silly!!

Here’s some silly faces the didn’t freeze!   ~P.

welcome said the spider to the fly

We didn’t walk into it or fight our way through it.

A beautiful work of art.

Spun to catch it’s prey.

Up all night, gone by day.

Temporary home maker, permanent bug wrecker.

Are you a spider hater?

Friday Night Fights in York, PA

The big news was Beeper lost.  Not fighting for 19 months and the strain of trouble with the law and domestic problems may have given fighter Ramesis Gil the edge he needed to take the win against Beeper.

Before the decision was announced, the faces were grim around the boxing ring.  I had watched the fight closely and was “pretty sure” my friend Beeper was going to have his first loss.  Everyone wanted our hometown boxer to remain undefeated but it just wasn’t in the cards.  Beeper and Gil gave a great match and perhaps if Beeper had been feeling better it would have gone in his favor.  The fact is, eventually, every boxer does suffer a loss.

I spoke to him after the fight, impressed that he remembered me from my days of training at Lincolnway Sports Center with Julio Alvarez.  He was just a kid of about 15 then but I was the only female at the time.  I had just started boxing at 29 for exercise and now he is 29 and thinking about possibly retiring his gloves.

I told him it was a good fight and the usual shit you say to someone who lost.  He seemed to be taking the loss rather well and deep down, probably knew before the decision was made that he had not taken the purse.  His beautiful girlfriend was by his side which gives me hope that things are improving in his personal life.

The amateur and professional matches prior to Beeper’s match are note-worthy.   Stand-outs from Lincolnway were Chase McGowan, Benjamin Carter and Koedee Gordon, all taking the win in the ring.  From Harrisburg Boxing Gym was Terrance Williams and Josh Bowles and Baltimore Boxing Club’s Stephon Morris.

After the matches I spoke to Julio’s wife, Sheri and told her they need to promote the fights more on Facebook.  Had I not read in the York Daily Record about Beeper’s warrant, I wouldn’t have known there were fights scheduled at the Valencia.  She agreed and while the crowd at the ballroom was large, it was far from sold out.

Enjoy my photos and videos from Battle of York VI.  I look forward to the next.  The link at the end of this post is The York Daily Records column on the fights.

I hope I got the fighters names right.  There were no match cards to easily keep track.

Great night at the fights in York, PA  ~P.

Foam What?

Since I didn’t stay in Georgia, I decided to drive until I couldn’t drive anymore then get a room for the night.  I hadn’t eaten or showered since I left PA and I stunk bad.  Ying didn’t mind though.  One thing about traveling with a dog…at least they don’t mind if you smell and they don’t keep asking if we are there yet.  We stayed at the Blue Jay Motel…a complete dive, but I was allowed to have Ying in my room.  When I took him out in the morning I was startled by all the vultures right outside our room.  I swear they were watching us!

Not Blue Jays

On my way home from Georgia, I made a detour in Virginia to check out the Natural Bridge. I quickly realized the entire town is centered round this bridge.  There was a Natural Bridge zoo, cave, haunted wax museum, café, hotel, etc.  By far, the best Natural Bridge spin-off was the trailer park.

I wanted a picture of this Natural Bridge so I followed the signs to the location.  There was a purple minivan in the parking lot that caught my eye.  Every step I took toward it, the van seemed to shimmer in a different color.  The paint job was awesome….who the hell paints a minivan like this?!

Soccer Mom Minivan

I didn’t see the Natural Bridge of Virginia because they wanted $17 just to walk through the door.  Oh well, I saw the billboard of the Natural Bridge and let’s not forget the trailer park.  There were other things on display from the wax museum so I snapped pictures and was on my way.

Creepy

Creepier

Creepiest

My trusty GPS directed me towards the main highway.  I was on a back road about two miles from the highway when out of the corner of my eye I spotted a sign off to my left.  “Foamhenge” I hit the brakes recognizing the name on the sign.  My Religions professor, Christa Shusko, had told me about this foam replica of the Stonehenge located in England but I had no idea where it was located.  I couldn’t pass this up so I turned around and drove up the dirt road.  The further I drove the worse the road became.  There were huge ruts crisscrossing the “road” and I hesitated to keep driving.  I didn’t want to rip the bottom of my car apart after she had so faithfully got me to Georgia.

I parked along the woods so Ying would have some shade.  There just doesn’t seem to be as many trees down south.  I was still shaking my head, amazed I stumbled across Foamhenge by luck.  I even giggled thinking my Prof would be jealous…I saw the Georgia Guidestones and Foamhenge!

Looks like the real deal from a distance….okay maybe not.

I didn’t stay at Foamhenge more than half an hour.  My Facebook status announced I had jumped on a plane with Ying and flown to England.  From a distance, Foamhenge was convincing.  Once I was closer I could see how the weather had worn the foam rocks down.  Pieces of metal, rebar I suppose, were sticking out the top of the rocks.  A couple of the stones had been vandalized but not anything serious.  The foam replica of Stonehenge was very cool.  Not spiritually moving, but cool.  I didn’t realize there was a theory about Merlin moving the huge stones with magic.  I think that sounds more believable than the human theory.

Baaaahahahaha!

Wizard Merlin

Merlin moving the rocks

Maybe Merlin was an alien wizard….he would have loved the minivan and vultures.

Harrisburg PA Farm Show

Dale, Drew, Tesla and I attended the farm show in Harrisburg.

My first comment is: It is a long walk from the parking area at Harrisburg Community College to the farm complex.

Second comment: It would have taken longer to wait for the free shuttle than walking.  Actually, that was Dale’s first comment.

Third comment:  The farm show is free and great entertainment for all ages.

Fourth comment:  You still need some money for crappy food and silly souvenirs.  🙂

Tesla was in awe of the Clydesdale horses pulling wagons.  We stayed for the saddled riders also.  Tesla would have stayed forever.

Tess and I bought two cool things.  A handmade tutu and a rainbow mohawk hat.  I completely agreed with her choices and she looked adorable in that Punky Brewster way.

She wanted to buy two.

HACC eagle

We all liked the eagle we passed on the way back to the truck.  It’s one of Brad Heilman’s amazing eagles.  I recently blogged about a sculpture he did on Druck Valley Rd in York.  http://girlboxer1970.com/2011/10/18/chainsaw-sculpture/

We had a great day without spending too much money.  I enjoy every moment I get with Tesla.

She called me tonight, already missing me.  She said she wasn’t allowed to sing songs with me before bed.  I heard John in the background say she could sing one song with me.  She asked me after when I would be getting her.  I told her I would try to talk to her dad.  She tried to get him to talk to me but he refused.

Again, I treasure every moment I get.

York County Mushrooms

Definition essay for Writing in Professional Cultures class

York County Mushrooms

Mushroom- Any of various fleshy fungi including toadstools, puffballs, coral fungi, morels, etc.  The reproductive part (fruit body) of the fungus organism develops and distributes the spores.  Dating back to 1440, the origin of the word is believed to be French and the surname of John Mussheron, from 1327.

Mushrooms are referred to as the “meat of the vegetable world” and are primarily used in cooking.  Purchasing commercial mushrooms for consumption would be the safest way
to enjoy their nutritional value.  There are only a small number of deadly mushroom species, but several species may cause toxicity to humans if cooked improperly and consumed.

Historically, mushroom extract has been used for medicinal purposes including cancer therapy.  Psychoactive mushrooms have been used in native traditions for mental
and physical healing and to induce visionary states.  This type of mushroom is commonly referred to as “magic mushrooms” and is available in many parts of the world, both legally
and on the black market.

Mushrooms can also be used to dye natural fibers, though that practice has been replaced by synthetic dyes.  Dried mushrooms can be used to start a fire.  Scientists have used mushrooms to create completely biodegradable packaging (replacing petroleum based products) and as a filtration process to lower the bacteria level in contaminated water.

York Fair 2011

The York Fair  September 11, 2011

We had a wonderful time at the York Fair!  A special thank you to John for letting me have Tesla for half the day and an even bigger thank you to Dale for taking all of us.

Pictures range from the rides, including a little boy who only had tickets so I volunteered to stand beside him and SpongeBob on the carousel.  I didn’t want to see his dad have to waste 3 tickets to stand beside him while I had a wristband.

I also took a picture of the back of a man’s head.  He was watching his son get thrown off the mechanical bull, meanwhile I was transfixed by the rolls of fat on the back of his head.  Is there an exercise to improve fathead rolls?

My mom entered a Christening gown she crocheted and took third place…GO MOM!  There were hundreds of pictures and paintings.  I was quite taken by Deb Lentz’s underwater acrylic painting.  It took first place and I’m curious if she would be interested in selling it.

We had a great day and only got a little sunburn.  Just as we pulled out of the fair gates, it started to rain.

Once we arrived home the sun broke through and we saw God’s work of art.

Just driving 3/10 of a mile from home and the road was closed.  People just ignored the road closed sign and cones across Carlisle Road.

My favorite Bridge #209 at Beaver Hole.

Impressive

I had to walk across a field because Bull Road to Beaver Hole was flooded.

The log was in the way

No lane bridge

Bridge 209 has serious foundation issues

I was told the bridge would be repaired this summer.  Now I think York County is just waiting for it to collapse.

Pinchot Park Boat Mooring Area
