Rape, Aggression, Defense

Ready to kick ass

Ever get that gut feeling you are being watched?

How can you lower your chances of being attacked?

Do you know what to do if you are attacked?

York College of PA is offering a free self-defense course to all female students. The Rape Aggression Defense System is a program of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women. This system is a comprehensive, women-only course that begins with awareness, prevention, risk reduction and risk avoidance, while progressing on to the basics of hands-on defense training.

The class includes self-defense techniques including defensive stances, punches, elbow and knee strikes, kicks, breaking chokes and holds and ground defense. The final day includes simulation scenarios where you can test your new skills on campus safety officers playing the part of aggressors. This is a perfect opportunity to vent any anger over parking tickets.

The courses are taught by nationally certified R.A.D. instructors and provide each student with a workbook/reference manual. This manual outlines the entire Physical Defense Program for reference and continuous personal growth, and is the key to our free lifetime return and practice policy for R.A.D.

Thursday, February 16th 6-9 PM

Friday, February 17th 6-9 PM

Saturday, February 18th 12-3 PM

Sunday, February 19th 12-3 PM

Once the course is completed each female student gets a R.A.D. t-shirt to wear around campus!

Interested in taking the R.A.D. System self-defense class, contact the campus safety office at 815-1403 or stop by in person in Manor Northeast.

Jarrito's Mexican soda

Move over big bagels, burritos are in town!  The Azteca Mexican Grill opened on Grantley Street four months ago, taking the place of Big Apple Bagels.  I stopped at Azteca for dinner and to chat with Ayala, a full time employee of the grill.

Ayala said he enjoys working at the Mexican grill and the rush of student customers keeps him busy.  During the busiest parts of the day, he has one or two employees join him in making Mexican meals quick and easy.  The restaurant décor is southwestern with colorful sculptures and pictures on the walls.  There are seats at a bar area as well as individual tables.  A unique display advertises Mexican soda called “Jarrito’s” and is available in multiple flavors.

Pork quesadilla

The menu is simple: burrito, taco, quesadilla, fajita or salad.  Decide if you would like vegetarian, chicken, steak, ground beef or pork.  I had the pork quesadilla with fresh Pico de Gallo salsa.  It seemed a bit dry to me and I immediately began eyeing up my boyfriend’s chicken burrito.  He graciously shared it with me and my taste buds did a little happy dance when I bit into the juicy, bean and rice loaded burrito.  The burrito blew the quesadilla right off my plate.

Ayala told me the salsa and chips are made fresh so I asked him for a few to sample.  The tortilla chips are kept in a toaster and came out warm and crunchy.  The homemade salsa was mild, chunky and obviously fresh.  A handwritten sign on the counter informed me of many future lunches.  “Chips & Salsa $1.70.”  A second sign advertised a large coffee for $1.00.

My conclusions of Azteca Mexican Grill; the menu is reasonably priced for college students, the serving portions are large and overall the food tasted good.  The Flex card is accepted for payment and the college WiFi signal is available while dining.

I’ve already been back once since my first meal at Azteca, just for the chips and salsa.

“Chau!”

Over ride rejoice

You know there are days you get out of bed and with in minutes you know it’s going to be a sucky day.

This wasn’t one of those days.   I slide out of bed (tall bed) and was surprised at how chilly it felt.  Grabbing my warm-up pants and Spartan T-shirt I instantly felt warmer.  Padding across the wooden floor I opened my sock drawer and found it empty.  Glancing at the two baskets of clothes waiting to be put away, I padded back to my bed and began rooting through the mismatched socks box.  The lights weren’t even on in the bedroom yet but I didn’t care if my socks matched or not.  I grabbed a white one and reached back in for any other sock that was similar in shape.  Presto!  The sock I grabbed was a match.  Then I knew it was going to be a good day.

I checked my email at school and had a message waiting from me from Dr. Zerbe.  He is higher up on the food chain at school if you know what I mean.  I was in a difficult situation in needed a specific writing class that I had skipped.  I went from writing intro to the 300 level classes.  Dr. Zerbe checked with the professor, Nancy Eshelman about an over ride and she agreed to have an 18th person in her class.  Woohoo!  Christmas came early for me.  Nancy is a great teacher and columnist for The Patriot Times in Harrisburg.

Now only a few more days left until Christmas is here.  I can’t wait for Tesla to get back to PA.  I haven’t heard from her much but her dad is sending pictures.  Soon Tesla and I will have a week together!!

Celebrating early!

York College Sculpture Parade

The introduction to sculpture class taught by Professor Rebecca Quattrone will parade around campus with their giant puppet sculptures ON MONDAY AT 11 AM.

The theme is “Occupy Wall Street”

Rebecca’s students have been busy this term.  The class was split into two groups by where we sat the first day.  The table I sat at had one person I knew who came in at the last moment and sat beside me.  Christian Geisler….McLoven, the party crasher. http://girlboxer1970.com/2011/09/07/christian/

York College Spartapalooza 2011

Frank T. Aquilino ~Class of 97

At York College of Pennsylvania, alumnus Frank T. Aquilino ’97 was remembered with a memorial scholarship. He was a bond trader at Cantor Fitzgerald and perished on 9/11/2001.  The 2011 Spartapalooza festival was dedicated in memory of Mr. Aquilino.

This year the Spartapalooza theme was class spirit.  The freshman, sophomores, juniors and seniors competed against each other for points to win “Best Class Spirit” award.  The contests varied through-out Grumbaucher Stadium.  Fieldhouse held a bounce house, dizzy bats races, velcro bounce wall, inflatable obstacle race,  thunder stick decorating, $1 black and green festival t-shirts, a scavenger hunt, and much more.

At the swimming pool, the cardboard boat races excited the crowd of spectators.  It didn’t matter who won and who lost….it was all about the boat.  The boat that put on the best show.  Float or sink, the crowd cheered in a frenzy.  A personal favorite was Team “Diddy Dong Racing.” They were the winners of The Titanic Award for their dramatic cardboard vessel sinking to the bottom of the pool.  This YCP team was all juniors: John Meyer, Ryan Hershey, Tom Powell and Mike Shaffer sacrificed their boat to take this win.

Team YCP USA  participated in the cardboard boat races.

The tug of war between classes was fun but also a bit dangerous as the four classes snapped the rubber bands holding the ropes together.  Determining who won was a challenge itself as the band broke, the sophomore class found themselves on the ground.  The points didn’t really matter, having fun did.

I participated in the scavenger hunt which allowed me to meet new people on campus, outside of my scheduled classes.  The game was to take pictures of what was on the list and I managed to find all the items.  The most challenging was the Spartan Helmet which I learned was made by sophomore, Taylor Lapierre.

Lapierre was also in charge of the class spirit games.  I participated in the games with my friend Phil Rearich.  Phil and I had a great time attempting the sack race.  I fell on my face trying to jump in a burlap sack but got right back up.  The freshman team stole our bandana when we reached the three-legged race but we managed to get to the next leg of the race.  With one shoe on and one off, I attempted leap frog with Phil and failed miserably.  I needed a much shorter partner!

The event drew a large number of students, faculty and children to York Campus.  It was a great day to show student spirit and remember a former student lost to terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centers.

There was an endless buffet of food and sweet and drinks to keep everyone’s energy up for the afternoon through the evening.  The festival ended around midnight with everyone exhausted!

Great times at YCP,

~P.

Leopold’s wolves and trees

The movie Green Fire was screened in the
Humanities building, sponsored by Schmidt Library.  The film was based on Aldo Leopold life as a revolutionary conservationist.  His achievements as a child to adult were exceptional.

Leopold was born in 1887, graduated from Yale and at the age of 22 he became a forest inspector.  He and his wife Estella had five children, all who took careers in science and land preservation.

Leopold was very concerned about the development of the Midwest.  As the land was destroyed by poor grazing methods, over planting of crops and general ignorance, Leopold realized that “man kills the things he loves.”

At one point in his life, Leopold believed killing all the predators would allow plentiful game for hunting.  As species of animals began to disappear he realized his error and focused to preserving the animals that were almost to extinction.  He was especially concerned about the wolf population.  The elk population was out of control and there were only 7 wolves left in the wild.  A wolf recovery program was established to rebuild their community.

What is interesting about this is 100 years ago, Leopold shot a female wolf and while she died he saw a “fierce green fire” that faded from her eyes in death.  About 35 years later, it was Leopold who starts the campaign to repopulate the wolves.
In 1934, the Wildlife Reservation was created in Wisconsin to re-establish animal and plant species of the brink of extinction.  In 1949 “The Land Ethic” was published.  This book is thought of as the Bible of the environment.  Leopold was and still is far ahead of mankind in understanding and acting on the preservation of nature.

It is the responsibility of private land owners to properly care for their land.  The government agrees with Leopold as there
are now laws protecting all land, private and public.  In the 21st century, the
importance of protecting the earth and atmosphere is stressed daily.  This is because of the actions and writing of
a man who “thinks like a mountain” and was intelligent enough to teach how to
care for the land we live on.

There was
a brief discussion following the movie concerning the biotic community as a
whole and what role the human population has in keeping it healthy.  Also discussed was Leopold’s involvement with Gifford Pinchot.  Gifford Pinchot is honored at Pinchot Park, located in Lewisberry, PA.  Pinchot was also credited in the conservation movement.

The movie presented a beautiful view of unspoiled wilderness, especially in the
Midwest and New Mexico.  Green Fire is an inspirational film that will continue to educate and inspire people world-wide in the importance of caring for the Earth.  This movie should be shown to students in middle-school and on. The importance of conservation will eventually fall into the hands of this younger generation.

I recycle,

~P.

P.S. The student I sat beside during the movie kept picking his nose, his lips, his face.  He stank too.  😦

Hellish Pain and Pleasure

“The term sadomasochism finds its roots in the words sadism, meaning to enjoy inflicting pain, and masochism, meaning to enjoy pain being inflicted on oneself.”

The Cenobites in Barker’s story The Hellbound Heart are referred to as sadomasochistic beings.  Frank bought the metaphysical puzzle solely believing it would bring him pleasure.  He did not expect a journey through pleasure with an end in hell for all eternity.   His first encounter with the puzzle box brought him pleasure beyond his belief possible.  He could not pass up the opportunity to masturbate, possibly not realizing the pain and torture that would soon follow.

Julia carried such a lustful passion for Frank that she was willing to do anything.  Her one sexual experience with Frank impacted her so much she was willing to kill other people to bring Frank back from the dead.  He told her his ideas of them spending the rest of their lives together after she made him whole.  Julia thrived on the thought of bringing Frank
back and having him take her sexually.

When Frank is taken back to Hell by the Order of Gash, he takes pleasure in the tearing of his flesh.  Kirsty watched as his body began to tear apart and was disgusted by Frank’s crude sexual enjoyment.  She ran out of the room while he wagged his tongue at her.

While this was all shocking in the mid 1980’s, the art of body modification, piercing, tattoos, scars and branding has come a long way.  While not necessarily part of sexual gratification, it does have it place in the pain and pleasure realm.

In walked a Weiner

Raybin spreading the weiner word

Just wrapped up my blog about the false fire alarm and the Fawn Grove home invasion and a hot dog walked into the Professional Writing Studio in the Humanities Building.

Tiffany Raybin, a senior majoring in Accounting had a message to spread. “The York College Bookstore now has a roller grill with hot dogs and breakfast tornados. There is also a combo deal.”

I snapped a picture of Tiffany and as she exited the studio she also added, “I get paid to do this” and headed to her next destination.

Blue in the face

A self portrait of pain

I’ve been holding my breath for so long.

My skin is shades of blue.

One eye always watching.

My mole now black.

One ear is listening.

My lips sewn shut.

Laced by hemp.

I strain against the binding.

Opening my lips to free the pain.

My head now cleared.

I nurture the thoughts that caused the pain.

My ear is open, my eye never blinks.

I can’t be silenced.

So in my head, I will hold the problem, but no solution.

A copy of your birthday blog.

Sorry it hurt your feelings.

Sorry you feel the need to take me to court over it.

Sorry it was just a picture and I hadn’t actually baked it.

Sorry I didn’t share birthday cake with Tesla on your birthday.

Sorry it never freaking occurred to me to bake a cake, for your birthday.

It did occur to me to write you a birthday blog.

It didn’t turn out exactly how I planned it.

But it has inspired me artistically.
