40,000

On September 4th I blogged about having 20,000 visits to my website.  Today, roughly three months later the blogsites visits doubled.  Yes doubled.  It feels great to have so many people ringside.

I just finished my New Religious Movements final on cult development.  It took me an extra day after I lost my fucking thumb drive.  I wanted to rip my hair out.  The thumb drive was never located so I started with my three page bullshit draft I posted in October.  http://girlboxer1970.com/2011/10/17/the-church-of-lady-gaga/

Now it is finished and I have to turn it in to Christa Shusko in person by 12:15 PM tomorrow.  I am pretty happy with my final but I won’t be publishing it online.  I have plans to submit it to a magazine or creative writing book.

What else is new….Tesla called me this evening.  She is on her way to Erie with her Dad and rest of the clan.  I visited with Tesla yesterday after school.  I had to pick her up at the house because John doesn’t want me taking Tesla home when I volunteer.  Perhaps he thinks I will show up at Canadocaly and kidnap Tesla.  Like I would ruin my life by breaking the court order.  What good would that do Tesla?

So I signed the paper under duress.  If I didn’t agree to sign it, he was not going to let Tesla leave and if I did leave, I’m sure he would call the police on his cell phone.  Lower Windsor Township is number 3 on his speed dial.  It basically said John was giving me permission to take Tesla away from the house for three hours and I agree to return her at the stated time.  Blah, blah, blah…what the hell is that all about.   It sucks having Tesla see me “sign” to see her. What kind of message does that send? I fail to see any section of the custody order that states I have to sign something every time we get some time together. Yes, I get that any time not on my 2 weekends a month is “technically John’s” but wtf is up with signing?

I feel like I’m checking Tesla out of prison.  I know she feels our time away is now an escape.  She says to me, I can’t stay with you for long.  Daddy said I have to come home.  I told her I knew that and I was sorry but she will visit with me in a week.  A week is a long time she answered and I agreed again.  Then a smile came to her face and she said but we are together now!  I immediately broke out into Tesla’s trophy song.

I get a trophy!  I get a trophy!  Tesla and I are together.  Tesla gets a trophy too!  We giggled our asses off on the way to Chuck E, Cheese and had a blast playing games and eating pizza.

It’s going to a long week until I see my baby girl again.  John said he will let her call me everyday.  Let’s see if he sticks to his promise.

Schools out for Christmas and I wanna blog!

Merry Christmas to my readers!  I love all of you and especially when you comment.  Even if someone says something not so nice, I’m fine with that.  Why?  Because I don’t care what other people think.  🙂  Here’s to 40K visits.  Let’s see how long until it doubles again!

Tired…like barely holding up my head.

Zzzzzz,

~P.

The end is near

The Church of Lady Gaga

The chosen disciple of Ga

WELCOME TO THE CHURCH OF LADY GAGA.  THROUGH HER THE WORD OF GA IS SPOKEN.  PREPARE NOW FOR THE END OF TIMES.  THE NEW WORLD WILL BE USHERED IN.  THE WORD OF GA IS FOR ALL TO HEAR AND LEARN.  ACT NOW BEFORE YOU LOSE THIS CHANCE OF LIVING IN A UTOPIAN SOCIETY.

New Religious Movements

The Church of Gaga

10/25/2011

The charismatic leader, Lady Gaga has presented her followers with the 10 Commandments of the 21st Century.  The guide stones are located in Elberton, GA and were placed there by an anonymous group.  While not specifically stated, they are
believed to be the creation of the Illuminati.  There is no formal church sight at this time but access to Lady Gaga and her interpretation of Ga’s word can be found in her music, tattoos, hair styles and photographs.

This new religious movement combines a strange mixture of established religions.  Gaga
was raised a Catholic and features her defiance of Catholicism by flaunting her
Illuminati symbols and devil signs.  She presents herself as the mother to “monsters”… everyone is welcome to follow her and she draws you into her songs.  She
dreamed about the GA guide stones until one day, they appeared with a message
that she understood.  That message is “follow what I do and say….dress like me if you want…otherwise just adore me.  I take all of you!  You must live by these 10 laws.”

1.  MAINTAIN HUMANITY UNDER 500,000,000 IN PERPETUAL BALANCE WITH NATURE.

Millions of people have formed online to see if she, “The Lady Gaga” has a message.  Her satanic message is causing the mentally ill to snap.  Deaths are occurring that
can’t be explained.  Not just random, but mysteries.  The earth is going to be
cleared of unworthy people.  The population will be reduced to 500,000,000 on December 21st 2012.  GaGa explains, “There will be no Christmas to celebrate.  Most of you will
be gone to Heaven and the remainders will begin a new life.”

 2. GUIDE REPRODUCTION WISELY – IMPROVING FITNESS AND DIVERSITY

We must stay in shape.  No one loves a fat Ga.  See how gorgeous I am?  Get up and learn my songs and dance steps.  No lazy Ga Monsters!

3.UNITE HUMANITY WITH A LIVING NEW
LANGUAGE.

Listen to my words earthlings.  I am actually an alien, planted on Earth through Lady Ga.  What she sings and says is My Word.  Learn this new language.  Study and embrace the new language and you will understand My word.

4. RULE PASSION – FAITH – TRADITION – AND ALL THINGS WITH TEMPERED REASON.

Get along.  Believe in Me.  Understand that I am of the Heavens, an alien.  You see because I send My message through Lady Gaga.  Be good to each other. The Anti-Ga Cultist Resistance Group (AGaCRuG) is out to take you from Me.

 5.  PROTECT PEOPLE AND
NATIONS WITH FAIR LAWS AND JUST COURTS

We must over-throw the government and start over again.  Most of those stupid
politicians need to go anyway.  I will decide the fate of the in prison justly.  Most will die, Charles Mason will be saved.  He is one of the chosen and will do Ga’s will as instructed.

6.  LET ALL NATIONS RULE
INTERNALLY RESOLVING EXTERNAL DISPUTES IN A WORLD COURT

Ga will continue his messages through Me.  Do not fear her messages.  They are everywhere and easily found.  Join My Monsters, learn and we will someday
have peace on Earth.  A new, utopian life.  There will be no external disputes.

7. AVOID PETTY LAWS AND USELESS OFFICIALS

We will not need written laws on pettiness.  Officials of the old religions will be replaced both in religious sanctions and governmental. No one will tell you who to love and marry.  Only those left are worthy, and may choose freely.  We will repopulate the earth with our Monster seed.

8. BALANCE PERSONAL RIGHTS WITH SOCIAL DUTIES

Be yourself but act with correctness.  We will be changing the world.  This world is full of hate and we have the ability to use that hate to start a new society by forming new families.

9. PRIZE TRUTH – BEAUTY – LOVE- SEEKING HARMONY WITH THE INFINITE

Be honest with others.  Be honest with yourself.  Show your inner beauty and
embrace it.  We will grow in harmony for eternity.  The Apocalyptic times are
here.  Heed what the ancient Mayans have taught.  There is no time to waste.

10. BE NOT A CANCER ON THE EARTH – LEAVE ROOM FOR NATURE.

Ga will judge the Earthlings.  If you are a cancer you will be banished.  The earth needs to
replenish its self.  Removing 6 billion people will clear the way for nature to return.

Just the beginning of my religious cult.  I think the final paper must be at least 12 pages.  Will keep posting as my assignments makes progress.

All hail Ga,

~P.

What to do…what to do?

Amusing the photographer, Tesla

I have a few days left of fall break before it’s back to classes.  My weekend flew by with Dale and Tesla.  Tesla and I spent a good portion of Friday painting.  I painted my sculpture for art class.  We had to do a figurative piece that had personal meaning.  I created a self-portrait and painted it to reflect emotion.  We did not paint my car again like we did this day when boredom struck….hard.  http://wp.me/p1j2Ur-lV.  We spent the day with Aunt Suzie and Blaine.  Dale met us at Pinchot Park and we had a nice time.  I kept sticking Suz with Ying patrol.  He annoys her.  I laugh.

So today I have quite a list of things to accomplish:

1. Find Tesla’s dance leotard.  John already let me a message this morning because I didn’t send it Friday or this morning.  I don’t know what the heck Tesla did with the leotard or the t-shirt she had on when I picked her up from Heather.  That was the same night Heather refused to let Tesla keep her leopard stuffed animal in her bedroom at John’s.

2. This goes along with number one.  Put away all the clean laundry from the weekend.  I have 3-4 baskets of clothes.  I’ve lost count.  I only do laundry on the weekends to save on electric.  If it’s nice out, I even hang sum up to dry.  Dale thinks I’m crazy as he just drys everything.

3.  Work on my literature class presentation on “The Hellbound Heart” and the movie, Hellraiser, by Clive Barker.  I am trying to make a slideshow picture to accompany the selected portions of the book I will read aloud to class.  I love to do presentations and take front center stage…I mean class.

4. Spanish a presentation as Carl Brady with my daughters Marsha and Cindy.  Marsha is Kristin James http://www.facebook.com/kristinmischelle.  Cindy is Olivia Sederstrom. http://www.facebook.com/osederstrom.  We are having fun with this and I will eventually blog about our presentation.

5. Religion:  Cult writing.  Might blog it online.  Any suggestions out there on wtf I can write…I have many ideas:  Lady Gaga as a type of disciple.  A really wacky one with Illuminated symbols, Satanic symbols.  The “Text” in The Lady’s Guide Stones, located in GA.  At the Georgia Guide Stones are the text inscribed in many languages. http://girlboxer1970.com/2011/02/26/the-georgia-guidestones/ I actually wrote about those long before I even knew I was enrolling in this NRMs class.  http://girlboxer1970.com/2011/09/29/gender-roles-in-new-religions/

6.  Kitchen: put away clean dishes.  (Dale washes all the dishes.  That is so awesome because I hate getting my hands wet.)  Mop floor, clear of island, finishing clearing the table.

7.  Clear coffee table of school books.  vacuum.

8. Paint my second sculpture.  I haven’t named it yet.  Will post pictures of the process.

9.  Read Sunday’s paper.  Was so busy at Pinchot Park I didn’t get to read much of it.

10.  Blog about Pinchot Park yesterday and the chainsaw carving I took pictures of all weekend.  It’s located on Druck Valley Road.

Will attempt the whole list.

Tommorrows another day,

~P.

Gender roles in New Religions

One key issue in the study of NRM was gender role.  Historically, most religions were established by male founders with female followers that participated in worship services.  These gender roles have been long upheld, but the emerging NRMs have succeeded in
breaking this tradition.  (Pike p. 215)

The traditional perspective of gender role in religion has been male domination over females.  This view is found excessively in established religions as well as newly emerging faiths.  “Women have accounted for the majority of participants in American religious
groups…NRM are not consistent in their perceptions or treatment of women, but
in this they are no different from mainstream religions.”  (D&A p. 5)

There are two approaches to the study of gender in NRMs.  The first was a “negative evaluation of NRMs as abusive to women” and the second approach “suggests that relations in new religions are complex and rarely reducible to the simplistic image of male gurus and passive female followers. “  (Pike p.212)  Examples of each approach can be found in the course materials.

In a religion based on a “master-disciple relationship” the male often takes the fatherly role, especially over the female disciples.  Abuse is frequent when women followers must obey without question.  Many high profile religions emerged in the 1960’s and 1970’s following the traditional pattern of a divine male figure.  These charismatic males were
able to create their own religions that became labeled as cults.  (Pike p.216)

Controlling charismatic male leaders have caused a negative view on emerging religions.  In 1950, James Jones, an unadorned pastor became the charismatic leader of Sommerset Southside Church.  His service there was short as his zealousness was too much for the congregation.  After several false starts, Jones founded the People’s Temple in 1956.  His charismatic appeal won him favor in the eyes of many established churches and he eventually became an ordained minister.  Jones visions of the future and preaching style enabled him to convince his congregation to move to Guyana after a magazine released horrifying reports of abuse and financial misdealing.  Jones was able to brainwash
his congregation into a mass suicide in 1978.  Information gathered after the suicide shed light on the cult Jones had actually created.  (Smith p.108-109)

David Koresh was another example of a male charismatic leader that was assertive in having control over his female followers.  The Branch Davidians were an established group and Vernon Howell, later known as David Koresh, became the leader.  Koresh believed under his guidance as a loving father figure, the congregation he referred to as his
family would establish heaven on Earth.  Under this charismatic mans leadership, the women, their daughters and even the men were forced to submit to Koresh as sexual objects.    In 1993 Koresh’s congregation perished during a siege by the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.  (Pike p.216, D&A p.262-263)

While men were typically the founders of alternative religions, there are groups that emerged under the leadership of women.  Studies found when
females establish a group and function as leaders, the women disciples are seen
as spiritually superior.  Neo-pagans base their religion on a “woman-centered theology” established by female spiritualist, Starhawk.  Also elevating female leadership is the New Age movement.  Both Neo-pagan and New Agers attempted to balance gender equality and avoid “absolute devotion to charismatic leaders.”  (Pike p. 216-217)  Sexual freedom
is important to these groups and sexuality is viewed as an expression of one’s self, separate from their religious identity.  (Pike p. 221)

Christian Science, Spiritualism and the Shakers were established by female mediums and all three groups have male and female leadership roles.  The lack of a single, male charismatic leader appears to enable these groups to avoid the abuse that often develops in male established religions.  (Pike p. 215)  Other religions based on extraterrestrial and
androgynous races, attempt to view their divine as genderless, removing the
importance of a deity having a gender.

The key issue of gender within NRMs is sensitive.  The abuse of
women by charismatic male leaders is a fact in NRMs.  On the other hand, there are established NRMs and ones that are still emerging that give equality to and even celebrate the females within their group.  In either case, gender will always remain a key issue in religious movements.

Defining Cults and NRMs

What is a CULT versus a New Religious Movement?

New Religious Movements can be defined as religions that society considers non-conventional.  Through-out history, religious groups were developed by means of tradition and followed a religious rational.  The NRMs are formed by people wanting to leave traditional faiths behind in order to develop or follow a new religion.  New movements are developedbecause of people’s desire to view themselves or society in a new way.
(Beckford p. 26-27, Weber p. 46)

A religion’s legitimacy may be based on legal, traditional or charismatic
grounds.  Well known religious groups such as the Mormons, Jehovah’s Witnesses and Christian Scientists at their beginnings, were labeled “emergent or alternative religions” and were grouped with “sects, cults, and psychogroups.”(Beck p. 26, Weber p. 46, Daschke & Ashcraft p. 1-2)

Legal recognition has been achieved by past religious movements by collecting and
paying taxes and requiring military service. Because the public fears what they cannot see, NRMs are encouraged to send their children to public schools and have an open door policy concerning their religious services.  Also lessening the wariness of concern is NRMs that do not proclaim the ability to miraculously cure sickness and disease. (Beckford p. 28)  By following these guidelines NRMs are shown a greater tolerance than
those religious movements that seek shelter from the public eye.

Emerging religions distinctly differ from traditional grounds of legitimacy.  Through traditional grounds, obedience is to the person who occupies a position bound by tradition.  (Weber p. 46)  The authority is placed in the position and not the person.  (Dawson Crises p. 81) Examples of traditional grounds of authority would be the Pope, cardinals and the Dahlia Lama.  NRMs seek to create a new “religious world”
by manufacturing a revised version of history, offering new ideals, habitation,
objects of authority and communication. (D&A p. 10-13)  They are formed on adaptations of traditional religions to satisfy people’s wish to view society and the world by
untraditional means.  (Dawson Comprehending p.60)

A common characteristic NRMs share is a charismatic leader.  People are drawn to a person who has charisma and the leader uses this natural ability to attract and gain followers.  Because “charisma can only be awakened and tested, and cannot be learned or taught” the leader is believed to be chosen by a higher power for their position.
(Weber p. 58)  Leaders of this type tend to be volatile and in essence, cause their institutions to be unstable.  It is necessary for the leader to carefully balance their actions to establish and reinforce their authority.  (Dawson Crises p. 85)

Daschke and Ashcraft compared NRM to earthquakes in their book.  It is an excellent way to view religion as a whole because all religions were formed in this fashion.  There was a sudden shaking by an idea or belief and that caused a reaction and this was the ground-breaking period of a religious moment.  Five typologies were introduced to define the qualities of religious groups.

A “new understanding” is formed, opening or awakening people to new thought.  People
tend to live life focusing on the negative aspects they have encountered.  A promise of a better life through religion can be an attractive offer.  A future of harmony in the spiritual life, free of errors they made while on earth, is available.  This life is available to
anyone, at anytime, by simply accepting this new understanding.  A NRM may seek out the young, mentally impaired, low income, troubled or isolated people offering a solution to their miserable existence. (Dawson Comprehending p.49, 61)  A charismatic leader could use charm to recruit members by making them feel “special” or chosen to receive this chance at a new perspective on life.

The second typology was “new self” that lends human-beings to seek growth as a new
type of person.  A person who desires to remove the negativity from their life and forgive themselves for their mistakes has to let go of the “old self” from the past and be able to focus on their future.  With the goal of spiritual perfection, humans develop their faith in a therapeutic way, learning as they grow, to become better people.  The followers of a faith offer support, education and release of past suffering.  A NRM gains credibility as
people shed their old ways and grow into their new selves.  Testimony of followers to new recruits will focus on how this movement has greatly improved the quality of their life.

Followers who leave the group may cause problems as inside information is passed on to
“outsiders” causing the charismatic leaders authority to become unbalanced and
questioned.  This may lead to violent behavior by the leader and/or the group’s members.  The leader may choose to relocate to a more secluded area causing tension within the group.  Outside pressure from anti-cult groups always cause turmoil within NRMs.  (Bromley p. 1,2,5,7)

The third typology was the offering of a “new family” setting.  The world is full of unhappy families.  A person who is miserable with the family they were born into may find a “new family’ highly appealing.  These “new families” may replace a person’s nuclear family. In exchanging a traditional family for fellow members of a religion, a new type of family structure is developed creating a greater sense of community. (Dawson Comprehending p. 51)  The leader of the group may be viewed as a mother or father figure,
fellow members as brothers and sisters and the young as “everyone’s children”
completing the new family setting.

The fourth typology was a “new society” for the newly formed families.  By gathering all the families in one place, a society is formed encompassing the accepted social and moral values of the group.  The group focuses on improving their society’s quality of life as a whole and working to develop it to perfection.  Pamphlets proclaiming the
“miracle” of The Peoples Temple, distributed by leader Jones, described family
life as a rare opportunity for “deep relationships” to all who joined them in
Jonestown. (Smith p. 116)  The desire to achieve a utopian life on earth is powerful in motivating the religious followers to uphold high ethical standards and social relations.  This can cause the group to appear zealous during and after seeking new members into their society.

Encompassing the first four typologies was the fifth, a “new world.” This will be the
apocalyptic transformation of the earth.  The followers of a religious movement view this as the final step of their faith.  Judgment is passed on human-kind and for those who believed in and understood the previous four typologies; their reward would be an ever-lasting life either on Earth or in heaven.  This “end of time” scenario is believed to be
the moment when the good people are sorted from the evil.  NRMs have made the error of announcing the day the world will end.  When the Day of Judgment passes with no changes on earth, the followers of this leader feel doubt.

The definition of NRMs as “alternative religions” seems vague, but applying
religion to Daschke and Ashcraft’s typologies does clarify how and why new
religions are formed.  The drawback to these typologies could be misunderstanding or misinterpreting their meanings.  NRMs that have questionable recruiting methods or membership guidelines will continue to exist.  Using these typologies while studying
religions can be a guide in understanding NRMs.

Hurricane Agnes 1972

The most damaging category 1 storm in history

The news is all over Hurricane Irene.  Mother natures fury has been set loose in two different ways this week, an earthquake and a hurricane.  The earthquake was a first for me.  I was outside hanging laundry and didn’t feel anything.  There were many people who did and I’m thankful there were no deaths.

Harrisburg

The first hurricane I experienced was Hurricane Agnes in 1972.  I was two and have no memories of the actual storm that caused so much damage.  My family made home movies of the flood and took many still photos.  I would post some but they are all packed up right now.

no doubt...the 70's

Hurricane Agnes was the costliest natural disaster in the United States at that
time. Damage was estimated at $3.1 billion and 117 deaths were reported. Hardest
hit was Pennsylvania, with $2.1 billion in damages and 48 deaths, making
Hurricane Agnes the worst natural disaster ever to hit the state. The damage
over Pennsylvania was so extreme, the entire state was declared a disaster area
by President Richard Nixon.

York City

Agnes poured as much as 18 inches of rain in two days. Flooding and fires
destroyed 68,000 homes and 3,000 businesses, leaving 220,000 Pennsylvanians
homeless.

In Harrisburg, Gov. Milton Shapp and first lady Muriel Shapp were rescued by
boat from the flooded governor’s mansion.

I doubt a canoe was used to rescue the governor

Its printing press nearly submerged and offices flooded, Harrisburg’s morning
newspaper, The Patriot, did not publish on June 23 for the first time since it
opened in 1854, said Dale Davenport, the editorial page editor of what is now
The Patriot-News.

No one was safe….not even Jesus’s sheep.

As Hurricane Irene passes through I pray everyone has a safe refuge.  Mother Nature is a force not to reckon with.  I believe these earthquakes and floods are signs of the end of days.  No, I don’t know when the last “day” is, no one does, but there is a last day coming.

Run between the drops,

~P.

End Note: Pictures and historical notes were taken from varies sites on the world wide web.  (The spider web that is covering the earth.)

Interesting Mix

Checking out my schedule for fall at York College of PA, I am amazed at the choices I have in my education.  Being an English major I just love anything that requires reading and writing.  Most students hate the reading and writing required during college.  To me, the English language is fascinating.  It has rules concerning how words are formed and used, yet contradicts itself over and over.

You remember the i before e except after c rule right?  Also, how words become plural and really don’t follow any set rule.  House become houses, yet mouse become mice.  Many words are spelled the same but have different meanings or sound the same but are spelled different.  English is just a confusing mess and I believe considered the hardest language to learn.  I feel fortunate to know and understand English.

My upcoming classes are Spanish I, Literature of Terror, Cults: New Religious Movements, Writing in Professional Cultures, Art in Sculpture and finally, Square Dancing.  Spanish is a repeat of the summer class I took and passed with a C.  I don’t feel prepared for Spanish II so I chose to repeat Spanish I.  Square Dancing is a gym credit and will wrap up the required 2 credits I need for physical education.  I hope square dancing is as much fun as recreational shooting.

My meaty classes are Literature, Religion and Writing.  Scary books are my favorite so I determined Literature of Terror should be an awesome class.  I am very interested in religion and just couldn’t pass up the new class Professor Christa Shusko was offering.  A class about new religious movements and with the year 2012 approaching, the timing couldn’t be better!  Finally, my writing class covers writing on the internet, web design etc.

I am pumped up and can’t wait for classes to start.  My thoughts and energy is being wasted on stressful things like court, divorce and future ex-husbands.  I’d much rather read and think about scary stories and religion!  Keep an eye out for my articles in The Spartan!

Ready to hit the books,

~P.

WEDDING PLANS

Imagine having your wedding planned for you.  Not just where it will be held or the flavor of your cake, but who you will be taking vows with.  Arranged marriages have taken place for centuries in many religions.  A young ladies husband was chosen to insure the proper blood lines of future descendants with in a hierarchy.  The concept of filial piety was viewed as a daughter’s obligation to her parents and how she should act on those obligations.  The film, “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” featured China during the 19th Century and the arranged marriage of a governor’s daughter.  It presented the classic view of filial piety and the importance of this virtue.

Governor Yu, has made grand arrangements for his daughter’s wedding but his
daughter Jen, was not interested in getting married. As her wedding date approached Jen wrestled with obedience to her father and the desire to live with a man she loves.   In a proper social relationship with her parents she is expected to accept her appointed husband and his family as she accepts her own.  To ensure continuing their heritage, she is to participate in the rituals and wedding ceremony and have children with her husband.  This is very difficult for Jen to accept because she was trained by a Master Warrior in secrecy and now knows she is destined to live the life of a warrior.  Her defiance of filial piety was blatant, yet as the viewer of this love story, I found myself in Jen’s corner.

Jen’s family takes for granted that she will accept her new role in life as a wife
and bearer of future heirs.  Confucianism taught that “Filial piety is the root of all virtue and the source of all teaching.”  In Ancient China, The Confucian Classics was a primer for teaching youth the virtue of filial piety. Jen was taught what was expected of her since she was a child and her family fully expected she would marry the groom of their choice.  She went through with the ceremony but then ran away with a bandit, Lo “Dark Cloud”, shortly after her wedding ceremony.  This caused chaos for her family because in Confucianism “..to decry filial piety is to renounce kinship ties.”  Jen involvement with Lo was adultery, an unforgiveable action of illicit sexual intercourse by mutual consent.

After returning to her true love Lo, deep in the heart of the desert, she receives a
visit by warrior’s intent on taking her home.  One female warrior who had sisterly love for Jen spoke honestly to her in a touching scene.  She told Jen she had been exiled from her family and could never return therefore she should enjoy the life and love she has chosen with Lo.  Jen already knew she could not return home.  She had sealed her fate with bold defiance.

If set in contemporary times, this movie would not play well.  Audiences would not give credibility to an arranged marriage.   That is because Confucianism now favors equality in male and female children, allowing them individuality and choices versus strict patrilineal tradition.  A woman can no longer be forced to marry against her will and may chose to just stay single.  “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” was a beautiful film presenting a young woman torn between pleasing her family and being true to herself.  Over the centuries many young woman of different faiths have suffered in this same situation.

Traditional Hindu and Muslim faiths also have arranged marriages.  Seen in the past, faiths such as the Sikh religion, had “marriages {that} are mostly arranged.”  Current day brides, from other countries and religions do not favor arranged marriages. Most religions are in favor of letting an individual decide who would be their true love.  Ruling Muslim patriarchs are ordered, by the Prophet, first to discuss with a bride’s mother on future son-in-laws and the bride to be honest with her father on those offered to her in marriage.  Hindu religion has also accepted a contemporary version of arranged marriages. This contemporary version is still traditional in some aspects by introducing the children at a young age and having the future bride live with her future in-laws.  She is essentially being prepped from childhood to young adult to grasp a woman’s role of descendent maker.  Traditionally, young girls were determined worthy by their line of descent, physical health, appearance and birthplace.  Presently, Hindu marriages are no longer arranged and couples are allowed a choice in their spouses.

“Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” was set in ancient times when contemporary views of marriage did not exist.  The concept of filial piety teaches when a girl is young she is submissive to her parents and after she is married she must submit to her husband.  She is to be cautious in her behaviors so she avoids bringing shame to her family.  In bringing this shame to her family, Jen could never return to her father’s land or be recognized as an  aristocrat herself.  This was a
terrible loss and to her family’s heritage line.   In Jen’s eyes, as with the woman of the 21st Century, defying her parents for true love was a sacrifice she would make.  Traditional family system and the concept of filial piety are no longer held in a high position.  Chinese society has accepted the loss of these traditions due to changes in their culture.  People are no longer attached to their land by patriarchal obligations or agricultural needs.  They chose to leave their familial homes to live alone or with unrelated people and support themselves financially.  This change in China is known as the “emancipation of the individual from the family” and the downfall of properly chosen bloodlines to insure suitable heirs.

In the film, Jen was expected to fulfill her filial piety obligations through marriage.  Her failure in “acting properly in human relationships” was Jen’s downfall.  The basic expectation of a young woman in China during the 19th century was to be an obedient child, then wife and finally, child bearer.  In the 21st
century those strict virtues are no longer placed in high importance.  Therefore in “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” Jen’s defiance and individualism in ancient times are celebrated by current viewers in modern times.
