PA Crime Victims website

Writing 202

Website Critique

March 8, 2012

The Pennsylvania Crime Victims (PCV) website was designed for a female victim of crime in PA.  PCV is maintained by the Commonwealth of PA and presented the message, “Anyone can be a victim.”  PCV focused on the rights of victims in PA and the importance of having a place of understanding on the Internet to cope.  Unlike most government run websites, the PCV first link on the home page is written for victims by victims of crime.

The PCV website is a credible source of information as it comes directly from the government.  The web-designer did an excellent job of organizing the layout of the website.  The home page is well-organized and has a clean, uncluttered look with a nice color contrast of tan and purple.  The subtle color choices work well and give a calm, serene look to the pages on the website.  Also on the home page is an escape button if a reader must exit the site quickly.  This escape button automatically redirects the page to Google.com.

There are nine pages underneath the home page link:

  • How the Crime May Affect You
  • Your Rights as a Crime Victim
  • Available Services
  • Find Help in Your County
  • The Criminal and Juvenile Justice Systems
  • Notifications About Offenders (Including PA SAVIN)
  • Financial Assistance
  • Empowering the Victim
  • Feedback

Each of these links will direct the reader to more links that fall under the relevant page.  I’ve chosen four of the nine pages that are not self-explanatory by their title.

The links under the title direct a reader to pages that are well-written and easy to understand.  The emotional appeal of the website is on the victim.   For a victim to make use of the website; it must be written in a language that any PA citizen can comprehend.  The information is concise and offers understanding to the victim, tips on coping, and answers to frequently asked questions.

The links under this title explains the terminology and how or who to reach to receive the available programs.  The number of programs is extensive but the website uses informal language to get the message to their reader.  This will appeal to the reader as an emotional connection can be made with the text.   Also on this page are victim’s first-hand accounts of crimes committed against them.  Including this type of information on the website is evidence that PA does care about its citizen’s well-being.

The creator of this website really had the victim in mind when designing this site.  A victim of a crime may just need a clearer understanding of the court system process in order to get through the process of testifying and eventually healing from a traumatic crime.

The links from this page are a wealth of information for a victim of abuse.  The safety planning page lists the steps necessary to flee from an abuser and the domestic violence page would be very helpful to victim of spousal abuse.

The Pennsylvania Crime Victims website format was easy to navigate, the hyperlinks were all functioning correctly, the accessible information was all relevant to the website, and there were no noticeable grammatical errors.  The over-all effectiveness in assisting the target audience of women in PA was excellent.  PA placed the victim first and put all the information needed for their safety and recovery conveniently on the commonwealth’s website.

Granville

Victims sometimes feel too ashamed to admit when something bad happens to them.  This is a natural reaction.

I remember feeling ashamed after I was attacked by a neighbor/classmate while his brother and another neighbor stood nearby.  I remember it clearly, like it was yesterday.

I was at church cleaning like I always did once a week.  Granville and Larry D. were outside with a kid and I could hear them talking because I had the windows open.  There was no air-conditioning at Rohler’s back then.

I walked over to the window and yelled out hello.  They rode their bikes up to the window and looked inside, wanting to know what I was doing.  I said I was cleaning the church then going home.  The next thing I knew, Granville was crawling through the window.

“You can’t come in here,” I told him.  He ignored me and was in the church in a matter of seconds.  “What are you doing?” I asked.  He didn’t have to answer.  When he grabbed my arm and started to pull me towards the baby nursery room I knew why he climbed through.

I thought to myself, I am not losing my virginity to this dirt ball.  I took off for the front door only to find I had locked it to “keep me safer.”  Now I realized I was locked inside so I ran downstairs, came up the other side, into the new wing of the church and locked myself in the bathroom.  Granville was yanking on the doorknob and trying to get me to come back out.  It got quiet after a little bit and I thought he had left.  As soon as I cracked the door he shoved his hand in and grabbed me.  I shoved past him using the door to my advantage and ran back into the main part of the church.

He ran after me and I tried to get back into the nursery without him getting through the door.  I didn’t even get the door shut and he had a hold of me again.  He was yanking the front of my jeans down but I had a belt on and that is what saved me.  He couldn’t get my belt open with me viciously attacking him with my fingernails.  His arms and face were bleeding.  I don’t know why I didn’t start to scream for help.  It was surreal…how could this be happening in the church I’ve been going to all my life?!

Finally, Granville’s brother yelled in, “come on Bud, let her go.”  I guess Granville realized it wasn’t going to be easy to rape me and his brother and friend were not going to help him.  He left the same way he came in and I closed and locked all the windows.  I felt stupid for allowing this to happen and embarrassed, like I would be blamed because I yelled out a hello to the guys.

I finished cleaning the church and walked home.  I never told anyone.  The next morning he walked past me on the bus and smiled.  I wanted to throw up.  Later I saw my friend Holly in study hall.  She came over to me and said, “Granville said he tried to rape you and that’s why he is all cut up.”  I was mortified and denied it.  I know Holly was just trying to be a good friend, but I was ashamed.

I no longer feel ashamed as I realize I did nothing wrong and certainly didn’t encourage his behavior.  Too many women become silent victims in physical, emotional and sexual abuse.  Until this stops, crimes against women continue to go unreported, devastating them and ruining their life.  I was lucky that day and I count my blessings.

Transcending: Reflections of Crime Victims

Story of Lynn Shiner of Harrisburg PA whose ex-husband’s murdered their children on Christmas Eve in 1994.  I had to read this article and reflect.  The reflections I had combined with my current situation…. hell it scared the shit out of me to be honest with you.  ~P.

Transcending: Reflections of Crime Victims.

Everyone should read this story.  It’s one of those “unthinkables” that actually happened.

Skinny Billy

Dale and I are watching “Billy the Exterminator” and I think since the last bug killing season, he has lost weight.  (Billy, not Dale.)

Anyone else watch Billy?  Noticed he looks skinny?

He’s hot in that “freaky dude” way.

Soooo quiet

Tesla went with her dad. It’s sooo quiet here. 😦

Her leaving went smoothly tonight. Unlike other nights.

John and/or Heather and/or kids seem compelled to accompany Tesla during the exchange. Sometimes all the way up to my car, parked at the top of the driveway. When John comes to get Tesla, I don’t even go to the door. This is much less stressful for Tesla and me. I am proud of her for sucking it up with all that goes on around her. Every time we are together Tesla drills me on why she can’t live with me. I tell her I am working on something with my lawyer to change that.

In the meantime, we must enjoy the time that we have together, not argue and practice using our patience. This part sounds very familiar, maybe because I had a similar conversation with her father years ago….so much for that speech working on the other Delauter.

Tesla told me she is remaining hopeful that she can change schools next year. Ok, she didn’t say it that way but she got the point across. I remain hopeful that a Divorce Master will finalize this divorce and the dust will settle. Only then can I really begin to plan for Tesla and my future.

Attorney General’s Office rang

Yes, they are checking me out.  Fraudulent receipt of food stamps.  Maybe more, I’m really not sure.

Calling about Zeth, who I took off my benefits list but his benefits returned at their insistance.

Why is this an issue that needs looking into?  I am sure all my phone calls are recorded.

I know it was started by you know who.

I’m not scared of you bully.
