Dover PA House Explodes

This story ran in the YDR: http://www.ydr.com/crime/ci_23410462/911-fire-reported-dover-township  The explosion was due to a gas leak.  No one was home at the time, but the house and much of it’s contents were destroyed.

The kids and I passed by the house on the way home from Pinchot Park.  All three of us were in awe of the devastation that occurred while I was in Philadelphia.  Here are a few pictures I snapped with my cellphone.

The family is in my thoughts and prayers.

Philly Family

I wish I could say I know my family in the city as well as I know my family in the country.  But I can’t.

This became apparent when I visited Philly two years ago and wouldn’t have recognized my cousins, with the exception of Eric.  I am closest in age to Eric and have fond memories of when we were kids and would visit him or they would come to the country.  Kind of the country mouse, city mouse story.

My Aunt Peggy (yes, I call her Aunt Peggy, it is a respect thing) loves to have us country folk come visit.  She graciously allowed me to stay with her this past weekend so I could attend the Writers’ Conference.   On the last day we celebrated my cousin Frank’s birthday.  Frank is an absolute card.  Sadly, I barely know him.  My family didn’t want me to leave Philly, but my little girl was anxious to see me back home.  I vowed to them all I would return soon for a visit, where I’m actually there with them and not in a conference room!

Benjamin Franklin Rests Here

On my second day in Philadelphia, I paid the $2 fee to enter the Christ Church Burial Grounds.  Founded in 1719 it is the final resting place of many names from history that I recognize.  Franklin being the most famous, of course.

In addition to Franklin, I learned the tomb of John Andrews D.D. was also in this burial ground.  Andrews was the founder of York College of Pennsylvania in 1787.

I had only an hour to photograph the burial grounds before they closed for the day.  I would have like to note the name of each person’s tombstone I photographed, but there just wasn’t time.

Enjoy!

Philadelphia Writers Conference~Day 2

Day 2 of the conference kicked off with sunshine.  For that I am grateful as my camera and raindrops do not get along.  It was scary driving on the city streets that looked like a stream.  My car is small and I was concerned the rushing water could sweep me off the street.

Here are photo highlights from day 2.

The highlights of the day for me were meeting George Anastasia and winning first place in Nonfiction for “The Prison Visit”  A version of that essay can be read here.   http://wp.me/p1j2Ur-18a

I love visiting Philly and can’t wait to go back!   ~P.

Philadelphia Writers’ Conference~Day 1

Here I am in Philly, awake when I should be sleeping.  My cousin Eric is attempting to park his large, old, and loud truck in a narrow, brick alley.  As kids, I recall spending time with Little Eric, Aunt Peggy (we all called her Aunt Peggy) and Big Eric, my aunt’s husband.  I don’t know what is taking Eric so long to…oh, now I hear him.  I should be sleeping.

It is writer heaven.  People I met at the conference are all in the same field so conversations are easy.  Meeting the editors and agents and seeing their interest in my work is fantastic.  Here is my day in photos after arriving at the conference.  Enjoy! (Click on first picture and the gallery will open)

Excited for day two and it is nearly 4 am.  Must get shut eye!

I Write

I write and I enjoy it.  Sick, I know.

When I dream about what I want to do in life, I dream about traveling the world, taking photographs and writing about the experience.

I dream that my photos and essays will have an impact on readers.  That I, as a writer, will make a difference in the lives of others.

I don’t dream of fame and fortune.  If I did, writing would be the wrong career choice.

This weekend is the 2013 Philadelphia Writers’ Conference and I am giddy with excitement to meet so many other writers in one place.  It’s all about contacts!

Dream big!  What’s the point of dreaming small?!

Dear John~6 days

Letters he never learns from

Letters he never learns from

Dear John,

After six days of not seeing Tesla and barely getting to speak to her on the phone, was it really to much for me to ask for 30 minutes with her to play down on the playground?  It is insulting to not only me, but Tesla also, when you say in front of her and anyone within listening range that “Tesla is going home to eat dinner with her family.”

I am her mother, you moron.  As much as you would like to pretend I don’t exist or count in her life, I very much count to her.  Who do you think is REALLY asking?  As soon as she sees me, she begins begging to leave with me or at least spend some time with me.  She’s afraid to ask you, so she asks me to do it for her.  Basically, you are telling Tesla she can’t have time with me that she desperately wants.  I drive ridiculous lengths to spend as much time with, or at least looking at, Tesla.  Asking for 30 minutes and being refused just proves your selfishness and desperate need to control Tesla and I.

Someday, just like I told her, she won’t have to deal with your stupid drama.  That’s not putting her in the middle, it’s telling her the truth.
